Wartime CDV image of Union General George H. Thomas

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War CDV image of General George Thomas. It is a period image of him in his General’s uniform. There is no backmark.

Major General George H. Thomas was a Union commander but was born in Virginia. Thomas elected to remain loyal to the United States at the start of the Civil War. A veteran of the Mexican American War, he saw extensive service in the western theater and served under superiors such as Major Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman.

Thomas came to national prominence after his men made a heroic stand at the Battle of Chickamauga. Dubbed the "Rock of Chickamauga," he later commanded armies during the campaign to capture Atlanta and won a stunning victory at the Battle of Nashville. There is a monument to him in Washington, DC (see pictures).
