Being offered is one of the original bricks from George Washington’s birthplace house “Wakefield” at Popes Creek, Virginia (see pictures). I got it directly from the digger/diver who is friends for many years with a 12th generation descendant of George Washington who still lives on the ancestral land at Popes Creek Virginia. He resides at Blenheim Manor, one of the 3 original brick houses from the 1700’s.
In the past he has metal-detected the home and very large property. During this search he came across the site of Haywood Plantation, a home built by William Augustine Washington, George’s nephew and heir to Wakefield ( George’s birthplace).
According to several publications, the house and a barn were built at Haywood with the salvaged bricks from Wakefield, which was destroyed by fire on December 25, 1779. Today, due to over 200 years of coastal erosion, nothing remains of Haywood except a rubble strewn field at the bottom of the Potomac River.
The digger said it was a difficult and time consuming dive from the boat because the bricks were so deep in the mud and river debris. He told me that “They are truly pieces of history lost for all time except for my efforts”.
The brick has a very nice brass display plaque with the history of the brick. I have included some pictures of the dive and the lengthy process of cleaning them. This is a rare and significant piece from where it all began for the “Father of our Country”. The shown pictures and documents will be included.
