This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a very large Civil War heavy tin cup, weighing 1 1/2 pounds. It has a diameter of 7” (not counting the handle) and is 6” high. It has soldered handle and seams, with a flat bottom, which is typical of mid-19th century tin ware.
Overall, the cup is very solid, showing signs of typical use for its age. There is some very slight surface rust but nothing serious. The different styles, shapes, and sizes of tinware were abundant in Civil War camps (see period photograph). I discuss the variety of tinware in my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items” (see pictures).
Camp sutlers provided plenty of tinware to choose from. Very seldom do you come across these large cups; I had one a couple years ago but it sold as soon as I listed it. This would make a great addition to a camp display.
