US Model M1832 Foot Artillery Sword, published (SOLD)

This is another great piece being offered, it is an original US Model M1832 Foot Artillery Sword. It is double edged, 19" blade with triple fuller. Originally it would be marked on the ricasso with “W.P. Ames/Springfield” and on reverse with inspector markings and date. This has worn off over the years, the only visible marking left is on the brass guard, it is the inspector’s mark “W.A.J”. It has a single piece brass hilt with catfish scale grip. The round brass pommel has a spread winged eagle on each side, total length 25 1/4".

In 2012, when I came out with my book “Civil War Artillery – A Pictorial Introduction”, I used this sword on page 67. At that time, I did not own this sword, but it was in the collection of Robert Fredericks, who passed away a couple years ago. I now have this sword in my possession and am letting it go, being I already have a Confederate example and one that came out of Lee’s Headquarters Museum in Gettysburg in my collection.

These heavy short swords were used by both sides during the Civil War. There is a period photograph with a Confederate soldier holding one of these swords (see pictures). Overall, this sword is very tight, no wobbling of the blade. It was well used but remains in excellent condition – the blade was coated at one time for preservation. I will include my signed artillery book with the sword, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.
