This is another unique item being offered, it is a cast-iron Betty lamp. The fuel reservoir has a diameter of 4” and is 2” high. Attached is the original iron arm and ring for suspension. These lamps originated in Europe in the 18th century before becoming popular in the United States. They were commonly made of iron or brass and were most often used in the home, workplace or on ships. These lamps burned whale oil or fat trimmings and had wicks of twisted cloth. A similar design is in "Lighting Devices and accessories of the 17th - 19th centuries", by Stan Hamper (see pictures).
The example here appears to be excavated or one that washed up on shore from a ship wreck. I have also included a photograph of a similar non-dug example. It is uncleaned and just as found but remains very solid with no chipping or flaking. I have no information as to where it was found. Obviously, it is very old, probably dating back to Colonial days but being so sturdy they remained in use well into the 19th century.
