Soldier's Pocket Watch cover, dug at Fredericksburg Battlefield

This is another nice item being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s silver plated Pocket Watch cover having a diameter of 2”. For some unknown reason, the soldier punched several holes in the metal. This unique piece was recovered by Mike Rasmussen near Hartwood Church, which is north of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Like many of the churches in the area, Hartwood Presbyterian was occupied by both Northern and Southern troops. The Union Army occupied it for the most time. They set up camp there, causing great damage to the building by burning all of the wood used in its construction. Though it took some time because the war left the region very poor, the church was repaired between 1868 and 1872 through parishioners’ donations. A neat relic which was recovered right in the path of General Burnside’s failed “Mud March”.
