Product Description

This is another interesting piece being offered, it is an excavated pair of scissors, measuring 7’ x 2 ½”. They were dug by Denny Chafin during a “DIV” event (Diggin’ in Virginia) at the Beauregard Farm in Brandy Station, Virginia (see pictures).

The Battle of Brandy Station, the largest Cavalry engagement in the Western Hemisphere, was fought on a large portion of the farm. Fleetwood Hill, described by Clark "Bud" Hall as "the most marched upon, camped upon, fought upon, fought over piece of real estate in American History," is partially within its boundaries.

In the Winter of 1863, large portions of the Union Army, including the 6th Corps under General Meade, were encamped here. The land is all largely unchanged since that time so the whole area is void of any modern intrusions, so it was pretty much heaven for any Civil War digger. This is a very solid piece and has a light coat of varnish for preservation. There is an example in "Civil War Relics", by Stanley Phillips (see pictures). Scissors were an important part of a Civil War surgeon’s instruments, so there is also that possibility.
