This is a very rare piece being offered, it is an original Revolutionary War Canteen: The circa 1770-1785 wooden military canteen measures 7 ½” x 2 ¾”. It is staved with flat sides and has the initials “J D” carved into one side. There is a small, raised bung with the cork present, two forged iron bands and three metal sling keepers. There is still a fair amount of the original blue paint still available.
A circa 1770 example of this canteen is in the New Hampshire Historical Society. There is another one that was used by the “Continental Line of New Jersey 1776” (see pictures). Both of these canteens have the same blue paint and measurements. Many soldiers who went off to fight the Civil War, brought Revolutionary War and War of 1812 canteens with them.
In my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition”, I show some early wooden canteens. This is the canteen I recently featured on my Facebook page “Civil War Canteens”. It would make a great center piece with any military collection. Don't forget the friendly layaway option.
