Revolutionary War Wallet with “1730” British coin inside (ON HOLD)

This is another nice early piece coming out of a 60-year collection of French & Indian War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812 artifacts. Being offered is a Revolutionary War soldier’s wallet which has a King George II Great Britian Half-penny, dated “1730”. The coin was inside one of the interior pockets – it is well worn but you can still make out the date.  The wallet is leather and measures 7” x 4 ½” in the closed position. The front has a closing tab that tucks into the wallet. There is a very faint signature on the outside, but mostly worn away.

The front folds down to reveal hand-sewn pockets. They would have held paper currency, records, coins, personal papers, orders, etc., circa.1760. Similar examples can be seen in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann and Kravic (see pictures).

This is the first time this wallet has been on the open market, and it is truly a great piece of early American History. I had a few early wallets in the past, but this is by far the nicest I have come across. It definitely merits a place in an advanced collection or museum. It is in very nice condition with the leather still pliable and shows beautiful age – perfect for display. As with all the pieces in this esteemed collection, a Certificate of Authenticity will be included.
