Revolutionary War soldier’s Shot bag, as in museums and books

$145.00

Product Description

This Revolutionary War hand-sewn leather shot bag is a representative of the equipment used by light infantrymen from both the American and British sides during the conflict. Measuring approximately 1 3/4 inches by 5 inches, the hand-sewn bag is constructed from durable leather and features an old work cap. It looks a little fragile, so I wasn’t going to take a chance removing it.

Its design allowed it to be conveniently worn on the powder horn strap, making it an essential accessory for soldiers in the field.  They were used to carry shot which was loaded with the ball (“buck and ball”) to increase the effectiveness of the load.

Similar shot bags from the Revolutionary War can be found in reputable institutions such as the NPS Revolutionary War Guilford Courthouse Museum and the Fort Ticonderoga museum (see pictures). These artifacts are also documented in the “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” by Neuman & Kravic, further attesting to their authenticity and historical value (see pictures).

Despite being over 250 years old, this hand-sewn shot bag is in excellent condition, only showing signs of typical wear and use. The leather is a little stiff but has no effect overall.

Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in purchases.
