This is another early piece coming out of a 60-year collection of French & Indian War, Revolutionary War, and War of 1812 artifacts. Being offered is a rare Revolutionary War Whetstone Carrier. It is made of horn and measures 7” x 1 ¾” x 1 ½” with the whetstone measuring 3” x 1”. It also has the original period twine carrier attached.
Some people in the 18th century did not pay too much attention to their tools, but with soldiers it was a different story. Having a sharp knife or axe was just as important as having ammunition for their guns. There were whetstones and metal files commonly available during all periods of the 18th century and earlier. An example such as this would allow the soldier to easily carry it on his belt.
This collection began in the late 1950s and was created by private acquisitions, closed museums, diggers and lake divers. The collector meticulously displayed and cataloged every piece along with any known provenance. There are examples of this whetstone in “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann and Kravic (see pictures).
This is the first time this artifact has been on the open market, and it is truly a nice piece of early American History. As with all the pieces in this esteemed collection, a Certificate of Authenticity will be included. It would go great as a companion piece to a knife, axe, or tomahawk.
