Being offered is a horn rundlet or possibly powder horn. It has the original carved wooden stopper and leather hanger straps. It measures 4” x 2 3/4” with the ends being tacked. They were considered and referred to as canteens. When used to carry liquor, they were called “rum kegs”.
There is an example of this one in the “Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”, by Neumann and Kravic (see pictures). It states that these common horn containers had multiple applications, such as a canteen, tobacco, salt, snuff, gun powder, etc. This rare piece is in excellent condition for being almost 250 years old, worthy of any museum. It is uncommon to find one this nice.
