Being offered is an18th-century Flintlock pistol. It has an overall measurement of 14 ½” with a 9” barrel, about .50 caliber. It has three shield-shaped mother-of-pearl inlays. It is light weight and in relic condition and has no visible markings.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, firearms frequently lacked markings because there was no legal requirement for serial numbers or manufacturer stamps. There was a shortage of weapons during the Revolutionary War, so many were made by local gunsmiths, imported without standardized markings, or had marks worn away over time.
As I said, this pistol is in relic condition, having some rust, crude repairs, and no longer functions. I would say it was probably made by some local blacksmith. Even though, it still remains a nice display piece in a Revolutionary War collection, and only a fraction of what you would pay for one in decent shape and operating condition.
Revolutionary War artifacts have always been difficult to find, and I am fortunate to have quite a few pieces in stock. With the upcoming of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding next year, there will be a revitalized interest. Just about all Revolutionary War relics and artifacts will be in demand, which will only add to their scarcity and price. I am already seeing a substantial increase in purchases.
