Revolutionary War American Tin Lantern, circa 1760-1790 (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$385.00

Product Description

Being offered is a Revolutionary War Tin Lantern. – often referred to as a “Paul Revere” lantern, but nobody seems to know exactly why. It measures 16” high and has a 2” hanging ring. The diameter at the bottom is 6”. When opened, it has a tin candle holder attached through the bottom which is correct for the era. A unique feature of this lantern is that there is a round tin sleeve on it for inserting a wooden pole.

In the 18th century, lanterns were crucial for providing light after dark, allowing people to navigate safely outdoors. Officers had to have meetings and go over plans and maps, often in their tents, so a lantern was their only means of lighting. They were also extremely important to surgeons when treating the wounded soldiers.

There is an example of a lantern in the Colonial Williamsburg Museum of the same design, but without the window (see pictures). This is a beautiful lantern and only has some slight surface rust. The door easily opens and closes, and it appears this unique piece has been stored away for hundreds of years.
