This is another nice item being offered, it is a regulation Civil War Cavalry Horse Bridle Bit. It measures 9” x 5 ½” with both of the original “US” brass bosses remaining. There is a near exact example of this bit in "Horse Equipment of the Civil War", by Howard Crouch (see pictures). It was found in an old 1800s barn just east of Gettysburg (see map). It was probably picked up shortly after the battle and remained there.
It is about as nice as a Civil War horse bit which you will come across. There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs, and seldom found in this condition. This is not a surplus piece, but one which obviously was used during the battle. It would go great in any Cavalry, Gettysburg, or general Civil War collection.
