RARE – Snuff box with Lord Horatio Nelson image, National Hero, dated “1845” and having initials

$265.00

Product Description

This is a very interesting piece being offered, and the fist I have seen, it is a hinged brass snuff box, having a 3” diameter. Stamped and pressed into the lid is a bust view of Lord Nelson. Engraved on the back of the container is the date “1845” and what appears to be “G T S R”.

Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte (29 September 1758 – 21 October 1805) was a British Royal Navy officer whose leadership, grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics brought about several decisive British naval victories during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest admirals in history and, by many, as the greatest.

Nelson rose rapidly through the ranks and served with leading naval commanders of the period before obtaining his own command at the age of 20 in 1778. He developed a reputation for personal valor and a firm grasp of tactics. He lost his right arm on a previous battle.

After a brief return to England, he took over the Cádiz blockade in 1805. On 21 October 1805, the Franco-Spanish fleet came out of port, and Nelson's fleet engaged them at the Battle of Trafalgar. The battle became Britain's greatest naval victory, but Nelson, aboard HMS Victory, was fatally wounded by a French marksman. His body was brought back to England, where he was accorded a state funeral, and considered a national hero.

This container is in nice condition and easily opens and closes. With the engraving on the back,  this might have been a presentation piece. Obviously, it was well used, judging by how the bust of Nelson is worn down. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
