This is another great piece being offered, it is the early style Union Percussion Cap Box. It has the belt loops on the back and the outside cover has the “US” embossed on it with the letter “I” above it and under it “14”. This would be for Company I of a 14th regiment.
The interior leather cover has the marking “SMITH BOURN & CO. / MAKERS / HARTFORD / CONN.” This is an uncommon maker and their accoutrements are scarce. The firm actually started in 1794 as a saddlery/harness maker and when the Civil War started, they began making leather accoutrements – at one time having over 600 workers.
All the stitching is tight, the inside cover is intact, and the original brass finial remains. Something you rarely see is the original wire vent pick is still in the box. If you need a cap box for your collection, this one has just about everything you would need.
