Being offered is another piece from the large Gettysburg collection I acquired, it is the lead sabot from a Confederate Archer Rifled projectile, weighing 1-pound, 4-ounces. The Archer design was a short nose and long tapered base with a lead band sabot (see complete example). It was recovered many years ago from the base of Culp’s Hill, Gettysburg (see projectile-struck trees).
Culp’s Hill has two rounded peaks with a narrow saddle between them. The main peak of Culp’s Hill rises substantially above the surrounding landscape. Nearby Baltimore Pike was critical for Union Army supplies and preventing a Confederate advance on Baltimore or Washington, DC - Culp’s Hill was critical to Union strategy.
The original attached tag states “Found at the base of Culp’s Hill, Gettysburg, near Rock Creek. Sabot from a Confederate artillery Archer shell, fired at Union positions there”.
This piece is from the collection of the well-known collector and author Charles “Hap” Hazard. He had a massive collection and was the co-author of the book “Gettysburg Battlefield Relics and Souvenirs”.
It was sold by his wife Miriam Hazard in 2019, after Hap’s passing (copy provided). This is a heavy solid piece in very nice condition from a rare Confederate shell. A certificate of authenticity will be provided with this artifact.
