Rare - Civil War soldier's Regulation-size Tin Cup

$225.00

Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is the classic Civil War Issue Tin Cup. This tin cup is approximately 4-inches tall with a 4-inch diameter (not counting handle) with a flat bottom. Not signed (none were) but classic with the large loop handle secured to the lip with two wire reinforcing loops passing from the handle around the lip of the cup. These reinforcing wires when present are an indication of 1850s – 1860s manufacture. All seams are soldered which is standard for the era.

These cups are always seen in Civil War museums and there are examples in “Time/Life – Fighting Men of the Civil War” and in “Arms and Equipment of the Union” (see pictures) and a similar one in the Gettysburg NPS Museum Collection (see pictures).

The cup is in very nice condition, only some light surface rust from storage, which could easily be taken care of with some olive oil rubbing. There is a slight dent on the bottom below the handle, but this doesn't take away anything from the cup. These cups are becoming very difficult to find. I have one in my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items” (see pictures).
