This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s folding camp stool. It has a carpet seat and when opened, measures approximately 20 inches high and 15 inches wide. The chair folds up nicely and has the carrying handle built into the frame – this is what made it ideal to be used in camp. All the wood is tight and solid, no visible repairs and is probably the nicest example I had in the past 25+ years. The carpet seat is a correct replacement, typical of just about every one of these stools and chairs. Although the seat is tight, I wouldn't try sitting on it and use it only for display – this is true with most antiques.
These camp chairs are often seen in period Civil War photographs of camp scenes (see photographs). I also have a similar one from my personal collection pictured in my recent book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”. These camp stools are very rare, the chairs show up from time to time – actually one on my website right now, but the stools are just impossible to find, especially in such nice condition as this one. It would look great in a Civil War soldier’s camp display. Again, even being a solid piece, I wouldn’t recommend using it, but for display only.
