This is another great piece being offered, it is an original Civil War artillery fuse box. This is the leather pouch that went on the side of the Civil War gunner’s belt. It held his paper time fuses for cannonballs. The overall size is 4 ¾” x 4” x 2” with a brass finial on the bottom. The leather closing strap which attaches to the finial is still present, but weak and looks like an old repair. On the back of the box is the original leather belt loop solidly intact.
Most of the fuse boxes available are marked “Navy”, and it is very difficult to find one without it. Years ago, it took me quite a while to find one without the “Navy” marking – it is in my book “Civil War Artillery – A Pictorial Introduction” (see pictures). I would say they are about 25 to 1. Overall, it is in very nice condition and stable. This will make a fine addition for an artillery or any Civil War collection.
