Patriotic shield cut out of a Jeff Davis Hatpin by soldier, dug at White Oak Church, VA

$75.00

Product Description

This is a unique Civil War item being offered, it is a patriotic shield that was cut out of a Jeff Davis Hat Pin (see pictures of one I have on the website). It is tiny, measuring ½” x ½” and is made of sheet brass. It was recovered years ago at White Oak Church, Virginia.

White Oak Church is located off White Oak Road in Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia. During the Civil War in November 1862, White Oak Church became the center, for seven months, of an encampment of the Army of the Potomac. Around 20,000 soldiers of the VI Corps camped in the immediate area. At this time, the church served as a military hospital, a United States Christian Commission station.

It is unusual and the only one I ever came across. It was probably done by a bored soldier in winter camp or one of the wounded. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
