This is an original Civil War CDV photograph of Major General Joseph Hooker. It measures approximately 2 1/2" x 4" and shows Hooker in his officer’s uniform, no backmark. Hooker is best known for the defeat of the Army of the Potomac under his command at the Battle of Chancellorsville. However, this victory for the Confederacy came at a high cost with the mortal wounding of General Stonewall Jackson.
The primary reason for the defeat was his inability to cope with the surprising tactics of the Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee. In many other battles, General Hooker performed well as a corps and division commander. He led two corps from the Army of the Potomac to help relieve the besieged Union Army at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and achieving an important victory at the Battle of Lookout Mountain during the Chattanooga Campaign. He continued in the Western Theater under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman but departed in protest before the end of the Atlanta Campaign when he was bypassed for a promotion to command the Army of the Tennessee.
This CDV is in very nice condition – clear and with no creases or bends.
