Original Civil War Union veteran’s G.A.R. Belt Plate (SOLD)

Being offered is a beautiful GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) belt buckle. It measures 3 ½” x 2 ¼”. The face of the brass plate is cast with a raised field of stars surrounding the letters “G.A.R.” on a stippled background.

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union who had served in the Civil War. This example retains nearly all its original finish. There are several examples of these GAR plates, and this is one of the most desirable high-grade examples. At one time this was a treasured piece of a Union veteran. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
