This is another rare piece being offered, it is an original Civil War Sergeant’s chevron. A previous owner (probably many years ago) placed this chevron under two pieces of glass for both display of both sides, and for preservation. The frame measures 11” x 9 ½”. Originally the stripes would be a light blue sewn to a dark blue wool background, but common with most worn chevrons, the stripes have faded.
Infantry companies included five sergeants: a first (or orderly) sergeant wears three stripes and a diamond, and four line sergeants, wear these chevrons without the diamond. They would act as file-closers, along with the lieutenants standing behind the two-rank line of battle in action, trying to instill some order in the chaos of battle.
This chevron is in excellent condition, only showing signs of extended normal use. I show a period image of a Union sergeant, as well as an original sergeant’s jacket (see pictures). As I said, original chevrons are very rare and almost impossible to find. It would make a nice addition to any Civil War collection.
