This is another great piece being offered, it is a beautiful non-excavated Civil War Navy coat button. It has the eagle perched on the anchor below her talons on the front. The edge of the button has nice clear stars and a rope border. It still has much of the original gold gilding in just the right places to make the detail stand out.
The original back and shank are intact with the backmark of "SCOVILLS & CO. WATERBURY”, circa 1840s – 1850s. Being pre-war, many of these buttons would also have been used by the Confederacy. This is the style listed in Albert's button book as NA102. This is a wonderful looking Civil War navy coat button with a gorgeous look and obviously used during the Civil War.
