This is another nice piece being offered, it is an original sword knot, the type worn before and during the Civil War. Sword knots were initially used by mounted soldiers to secure the sword to their wrist so as to prevent the loss of the sword while in the heat of battle. One end of the cord was attached to the hilt of the sword with the other around the wrist of the mounted trooper.
Sword knots were all privately purchased and commercially available from military goods dealers who supplied different types that conformed generally to regulations. An officer might use a leather knot in the field, but dress regulations specified gold bullion.
The overall size of the piece is around 13”. There is some fraying, and it has been reinforced with some stitching, but visually, it is a great representation. This is not a surplus knot, but one that was definitely used in the field. I have included some pictures of swords with knots to show how they were used. If you have a sword, this would be a great piece to add to it.
