This is another interesting piece out of the very large 50-year Civil War collection I am working on, it is an original leather Civil War Flag Carrier Baldric. Made of black bridle leather, the three-piece sling was to be worn around the marcher’s neck during parades and various official ceremonies when necessary to carry a flag. When laid flat as shown, it measures 30” and has no markings.
It consists of two, leather belt-like sections and a leather tapered cup. One belt section is folded over and riveted to secure a large roller buckle. Opposite end riveted to the leather cup. Second belt section has small holes to catch the clasp while the opposite end is riveted to the leather cup. In operation, the flag pole would rest in the cup while the marcher held the mid part of the pole. All leather is strong and supple, but there is some flaking and light crazing to the leather surfaces. These belts are seldom seen unmarked.
