Original Civil War Cigar Holder Pocket Case (SOLD)

This is another great personal item being offered, it is a Civil War Cigar Holder Pocket Case. It is a hinged two-piece tin case with the capacity to hold six cigars. The design is very similar to the Parker Patent 1860 eyeglass case, although there are no markings. In the closed position it measures 5 ½” x 2 ½”.

The tag accompanied this case states that it was the type used by General U.S. Grant when he was on campaign. I have not seen an exact example of one belonging to Grant, but it is typical of what soldiers and officers would carry – they needed to be light weight and designed to keep cigars dry. I did find a case identified to Grant, but it was mahogany and much fancier, one used while he was President (see pictures). Grant himself was said to smoke 20 cigars a day.

It is in very nice condition and would be a great addition to any Civil War collection, especially nice with a period cigar (also available).
