This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Veteran’s ribbon from the Battle of Gettysburg. Overall it measures approximately 6 ½” x 3”. The silk ribbon has embossed in gold lettering “Veteran / Gettysburg / July 1*2*3 / 1863”. It also has the New York State seal with “Excelsior”. On the top is a gold medal bar with a crossed sword and musket, a cannon barrel and “New York Day” with 1863 on one side and 1893 on the other.
In 1893, on the 30th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the State of New York decided to support the return of those living veterans of that battle to Gettysburg for the dedication of the New York Monument. Special trains were arranged to take the soldiers from various parts of New York to Gettysburg, and the old soldiers camped on the old battlefield for the 3 days of commemoration, July 1-3, 1893.
The ribbon is in very nice condition which is rare for being silk. The gold embossing is a little weak around the state seal, but overall it is very readable. This is a rare ribbon and a great piece of Gettysburg history. A similar ribbon is displayed at the Visitor's Center at Gettysburg (see pictures). Comes in the glass top display case pictured.
