This is a fantastic item being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s whiskey flask, measuring 6” x 3” x 1 ½”. The actual glass flask is early to mid-19th century, with an open pontil on the base. It has a brown leather two-piece cover and having the early manufacturer’s name “SYKES” embossed into the side.
While looking closely at the cover, I found the faint initials which appear to be “W.H.C.” Also faintly marked on the base of the cover is “Sep 10th 18…” Many Civil War soldiers were drinkers (or picked up the habit after enlisting). In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into more detail on this subject (see pictures).
I have handled and owned many whiskey flasks over the past 25-plus years, and this is definitely the nicest example I have come across. The flask is in beautiful condition and because of its high quality, probably belonged to an officer. If you want to add a flask to your collection of soldiers personal effects, this is the one.
