This is a fantastic Civil War Padlock being offered, measuring 2 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 7/8". On the front is a solid brass keyhole cover with the initials "M.W / & Co". It easily slides open to reveal the brass covered key hole. The back has a solid round brass piece which is part of the locking mechanism. It is in the locked position.
These type of locks were very popular during the Civil War which is validated by the number of examples found at campsites. There are examples in "Civil War Artifacts - A Guide for the Historian", by Howard Crouch (see pictures). I also have a very similar one in my book "Battle of Gettysburg - The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs" (see pictures). It was found in the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. They were commonly used on Artillery and Ammunition chests. This one is in very nice condition.
