Product Description

This is another nice item being offered, it is an original wartime CDV image of Private Lindsay Black seated next to his wife with his arm over her shoulder. He is wearing a four-button sack coat and black boots. She is wearing an attractive floral print dress. The back has a cancelled 3-cent stamp and the studio backmark “Photographed by Ewing & Painter, cor. Market and Second Streets, Harrisburg, PA”. There are also old pencil notes with his name and regiment, etc.

Black enlisted on October 28, 1861 at Oak Forest, Pennsylvania. On November 6 he mustered into Company G of the 85th Pennsylvania Infantry. On June 25, 1865 he transferred into the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On August 16, 1864 he was wounded at the Battle of Deep Bottom, Virginia. At the Battle of Deep Bottom, August 14 – 16, 1864, about two hundred prisoners were captured in a charge against the Confederates. The Eighty-fifth, in addition to a number of prisoners, took three stands of colors, however, its loss was severe. An eyewitness on August 16 said:

" .... the enemy withheld his fire until the troops were close to his works, and when the first volley was delivered, I thought the men were lying down to protect themselves from the fire. It was only when the thinned ranks closed up, as they quickly did, that I realized that the fallen were either killed or wounded."

The loss was nine killed and fifty-four wounded, five mortally, and one taken prisoner. Captains Lewis Watkins and Levi M. Rogers were among the mortally wounded. On the afternoon of the 18th the enemy charged, but was easily repulsed, the Eighty-fifth, under cover of a rude breastwork, having but one wounded.

During the Civil War, the 85th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment lost 7 officers and 90 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 4 officers and 146 enlisted men to disease during the Civil War.

Pictures of Civil War soldiers and their wives are very desirable, even more so when identified. The overall condition of the CDV is very good, no bends or creases and the subjects are clear. The copy of Black’s record shown will be included.
