This is another nice item being offered, it is an 1844 Henry Clay “Hard Times” token. It is made of brass and having a diameter of one inch. It was minted with the hole on top to wear with a string or on a watch fob. As seen in the photographs, it is very worn, but the front has an image of Clay with “Henry Clay / Ashland Farmer / Born April 12, 1777 / 1844”. The reverse would state “Weighed in Balance & Found Wanting / 1840”.
Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American lawyer, planter, and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives. He also ran for President several times. This unique piece was recovered several years ago at the Vicksburg Battlefield. (Free shipping)
