This is another nice piece being offered, it Is a period framed lithograph of Major Robert Anderson. It measures 9 ½” x 11 ½” in the wooden back 19th century frame. There is a stain on the right side of the background (not on the image itself)), but it almost blends in - overall, a nice piece of history.
Major Robert Anderson was a career U.S. Army officer who fought for the Union during the Civil War. Anderson was the commander of the Federal garrison at Fort Sumter, SC in April 1861, when Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on his position. This marked the beginning of the American Civil War.
When confronted on April 11 with a formal demand for surrender, Anderson showed no weakness. He defended Fort Sumter from Confederate attack and surrendered after 34 hours of siege. On April 14, 1865, Anderson returned to Fort Sumter to raise the United States flag over the fort, four years from the date he had lowered it.
