Early Gettysburg souvenir, gavel from battlefield wood (SOLD,MW)

This is truly a unique item being offered, it is a wooden gavel which was made from wood from the Gettysburg Battlefield. It measures 8” long and the head is 3 ¼” x 1 ¾”. Affixed to the handle is an old typewritten tag which states “WOODEN GAVEL MADE FROM WOOD FROM THE GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD”.

Gettysburg souvenirs were very popular, starting with the 1863 battle and continuing right up until today. Relics from the battlefield were used in desk sets and wood was gathered for carving canes and souvenirs. In my book “Battle of Gettysburg – The Relics, Artifacts & Souvenirs”, I discuss just how significant these types of souvenirs were, especially with returning veterans.

The example here is in nice condition, still tight. There are some scuffs and rubs, but that is normal for its age. This gavel dates to the early 20^th century. Gettysburg souvenirs, especially the earlier specimens, are very desirable and becoming hard to find.
