This is a great piece being offered, it is a large Civil War Heart Rosette. It is made of brass with two iron hooks on the reverse. The diameter is 2 ¼”. Rosettes were used to adorn the leather horse headstalls. Many of the Union examples had eagles, ‘US”, and “USA”. Many private purchase or civilian horse rigs were pressed into service during the Civil War, particularly by southerners, including those confiscated during the 1862 and 1863 Maryland/ Pennsylvania campaigns.
Although there are examples of use by the Union, the heart and star motifs were generally considered Confederate. A YouTube search shows an identical example of this piece being dug in a Confederate occupied area. This piece was part of a large Civil War collection I acquired. It has a beautiful untouched patina and possibly was an early recovery from a Civil War site. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
