This is really a unique piece being offered, it is an excavated Civil War Confederate Drum canteen. It is the typical size of 2” 6 ½” and has two of the three sling loops still attached – the thin tin spout is long gone. This canteen has a wheel impression from being run over by a cannon or wagon, In my book “The Civil War Canteen – Third Edition”, I show examples of canteens which were run over (see pictures).
As you can see in the pictures, one side of the canteen has a rusted out hole. However, the canteen has been coated for preservation and is now very solid. These canteens which were run over are rare, very seldom to they come up for sale. I myself always purchase them when they become available, which isn’t often. They always make a great conversation piece, and being from Gettysburg and Confederate, only adds to it. This is one of the canteens I showed on my Facebook page “Civil War Canteens” awhile back.
