This is another nice item being offered, it is what is known as a "Squat" pottery inkwell. It measures approximately 2" x 2" and has a very light glaze. These inkwells were popular throughout the Civil War and there is an example in the Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum (see pictures). There is one that was recently dug at a Civil War site in Virginia (see pictures).
In my recent book "The Civil War Soldier - His Personal Items", I have an example pictured and go into more detail about how important letter writing was to the Civil War soldier (see pictures). It is in excellent condition with no cracks. They go great in a display with a letter and pen.
