This is another interesting piece being offered, it is a Civil War small portable stove. It is made of brass and there are three pieces – the main body with door, the lid, and the small fuel container. It has a 4” diameter and stands 5 ¼” high. Originally, the small brass container would have had whale oil or kerosine with a wick. Now a small candle was put in just for display.
The size of this unit was small enough to be carried in a back pack or an officer’s trunk. Once the wick was lit and the top removed, a tin cup or small pot would be placed on top to heat the coffee or food. Many instances soldiers did not have enough time to build a fire, so a little unit like this was ideal. It is in very good condition and still has the untouched patina. It would make a nice addition to a Civil War soldier’s camp display.
