This is a nice set of cutlery being offered, it is a knife and fork which is typical of what the Civil War soldier used. They both have bone/ivory handles with pewter accents. The knife measures 9” and the fork measures 7 ½”. The only visible marking is on the knife, and I believe it is “Meriden Cutlery Company”. They were established in 1850 and were a leading supplier of cutlery during the 19th century.
In my book "The Civil War Soldier - His Personal Items", I show several examples of these utensils along with a set which was recovered from the Civil War wreck of the "Cairo" (see pictures). These sets go great with a display of a soldier’s personal effects.
