Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War soldier’s collapsible pewter cup in a jappaned tin case. It has a diameter of 2 ½” and when opened 2 ¾” high. These cups were very popular during the Civil War, mainly because of their size which made it easy to carry in a pocket, haversack, or backpack. In Time/Life Echoes of Glory - Arms and Equipment of the Union and The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia, by Francis Lord, there are examples of this cup.

In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I have similar cups and discuss the importance of such items (see pictures). Also, these cups are displayed in most Civil War museums, including the Gettysburg NPS Museum (see pictures). The cup remains in very nice condition, and easily opens and closes. A great piece to display with a soldier’s personal effects.

The cup remains in very nice condition, only having the typical chipping of the tin case from use, and it easily opens and closes. A great piece to display with a soldier’s personal effects.
