Civil War Soldier’s Folding Comb as in books (SOLD)

Out of Stock

$85.00

Product Description

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War comb. It appears to be made of hard rubber/gutta-percha and measures 6” x ¾”. During the Civil War, just about every soldier had a comb, both for his hair and beard. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I further discuss these artifacts (see pictures).

There is an example of this comb in Time/Life “Arms and Equipment of the Union” (see pictures). There were similar combs which were recovered in 1988 from the shipwreck ”S.S. Central America”, which had been traveling from Panama to New York in September 1857 when it sank off the South Carolina coast in a hurricane with 425 people aboard.

The comb is in very nice condition with all of the teeth still remaining. It would make a great addition to a display of a Civil War soldier’s personal effects. This is one of those items which are difficult to find.
