This is the typical leather wallet which would have been carried by soldiers during the Civil War. In the closed position it measures 4 ¾” x 3” and is made soft pliable brown leather. There are several compartments in the wallet for paper currency, stamps, coins, documents, etc.
Inside the wallet there is a bank note for 15-cents from Newark, NJ, dated Oct. 1, 1862. There are also two coins – an 1862 cent and an 1863 cent. Both the note and the coins remain in nice condition.
As expected, the wallet is worn and well used as can be seen in the pictures, however it still remains intact and makes an excellent display piece. In my recent book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I have several wallets pictured and go into more detail (see pictures).
