This is another great piece being offered, it is a Civil War soldier-carved gutta-percha ring. It was fashioned from gutta-percha / hard rubber and bears the script inscribed initials “E H”. This ring was likely cut from a discarded photo case, a cup, or other period utilitarian piece made from the then common gutta-percha material. Often, gutta percha rings were made at POW camps during the civil war and a great source of revenue.
Many Union guards and civilians would purchase POW rings for themselves and relatives. It was unique to have something made by a “real Confederate Rebel”. I show a grouping of Gutta Percha carved rings from the Civil War (see pictures).
During the war Union soldiers also had their downtime, especially during winter camps. They would do these types of carvings, usually to send home to a loved one. In my book “The Civil War Soldier – His Personal Items”, I go into detail on how soldiers passed the time. In the Gettysburg NPS Museum Collection, they have a gutta percha ring that was found on Pickett’s Charge (see pictures).
These carved rings are sought out by Civil War collectors. They are very personal items that at one time were very important to the soldier who carved it, or if gifted to a loved one back home. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
