This is another nice item piece being offered, it is a four-draw Civil War “Spy Glass” telescope. It is made of brass and measures 8” when it is fully opened, when closed 2 ½” x 1 ¼”. It is void of any markings, which is typical and correct for the era. In the "National Civil War Museum" in Harrisburg, PA, there is an example of this telescope (see pictures).
Telescopes such as these were an important tool of the artillery, Engineers, Cavalry and Field officers. The size was ideal for carrying in a haversack or coat pocket. In “Civil War Artifacts”, by Howard Crouch, there is a similar example that was excavated in Fredericksburg (see pictures).
The outside has a very pleasing patina with a few darker maroon areas. The glass at both ends appears to be in excellent shape along with the optics. No doubt this telescope was used, but overall, a solid piece and in nice condition. It would fit in well with an officer’s, artillery, or cavalry display.
