Civil War officer’s cloth artillery hat insignia (SOLD)

This is another nice piece being offered, it is a Civil War officer’s artillery hat insignia, measuring 2 ½” x 1 ¾”. It features crossed cannons made of gold bullion thread on a black felt oval outlined with gold dead bullion. Cannons slightly enhanced by the use of twisted bullion. Some light surface wear and bullion thread has oxidized a bit otherwise the item is very good. The back still has the four brass pins for attachment to the headgear.

The crossed cannons hat insignia was common for artillery officers, both Union and Confederate. I show some original hats with this same insignia (see pictures). The one offered here is not a surplus piece, but one which was worn through the Civil War. It is in nice condition and comes in the glass top display case pictured.
