This is another interesting piece being offered, it is Civil War “SNY” Belt Plate. It measures 3 ½” x 2” and has the full lead back, however the hooks are gone. It was recovered in the 1990s from a Civil War shipwreck off the coast of South Carolina.
Many divers are aware of the wreck, but the name of the ship was never 100% identified. However, it was always presumed to be “The Governor”, but new research shows that it is actually “The Suwanee”, a mid-19th-century 200’ paddle wheeler. It is located 22 miles off the coast of Murrells Inlet, SC.
The outer brass is discolored, but it is a very solid plate, with the SNY very recognizable. Over the years I have acquired several relics from this shipwreck directly from the divers. This is a rare piece of history. It comes in the glass top display case pictured.
