This is a nice Civil War item being offered, it is a Civil War period lantern. The metal base has a diameter of 6” and the overall height to the top of the hanging ring is 17”. The small round wick-height adjuster is dated “1864”. They were commonly known as “Onion Lanterns”.
Civil War lanterns typically used whale oil but kerosine took over as the war progressed. With kerosine, it was more accessible and provided brighter light. There is a similar example of this lantern in the Smithsonian Museum (see pictures). What is also interesting is a Civil War period photograph showing two of these lanterns in a tent behind a officer (see pictures).
This lantern remains in nice condition, only having some minor surface rust, and even some of the original black paint remains. The glass globe has no damage or cracks. An expert in early lighting looked at this lantern and told me they were only produced from 1859 to 1865. This would make a great addition to any Civil War collection or camp scene.
