A while back I acquired a rather large Civil War collection and with it was this small case of GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) items. It consists of four coat-size GAR buttons. Three have backmarks of “Chas. Rubens & Co. Chicago” and the other “Goodwins Patent July 27, 1876”. There are two cuff buttons, one with the Rubens backmark and the other “Waterbury Button Co.”
Also, there is a Veteran’s Eagle Pin. The Eagle clutches a saber in its talons while perched upon larger crossed cannons which rest on a stack of cannon balls. The reverse side of the eagle, just below the pin, has stamped: “Pat. May 4, 1886” and just below that is: “June 22, 1886”. The pin measures 1 1/2" w x 7/8" high. These pins are very desirable.
All these pieces came together in the same riker box and are in beautiful condition - most likely came off the same veteran’s uniform. Feeling that they were from the same soldier, I decided not to break the small collection up, but offer it just as I received it.
